GES was the second project of the Facility Master Plan Phase 1a. Due to the age of the building, the design stage of this project began in January of 2011, and the final design was approved by the Board of Trustees in September 2011, at which time Core Construction of Nevada delivered the Guaranteed Maximum Price proposal (GMP).
Construction began in October of 2011, and is anticipated to be complete in September 2012, at least two months ahead of the originally proposed completion date.
The improvements at GES are numerous and far reaching. Nearly all existing classrooms will be modified to the new District standard. Special Education Suites are being created, and the school office location is moving to a central point of access for the site. A new wing of 9 classrooms is being added to meet the capacity needs for this site to accommodate the closure of the Heritage Building. Also, a new Commons/Multi-purpose room is being constructed, with brand new kitchen facilities, and a stage area that will double as the Art and Music classrooms.
An additional improvement being made is the traffic pattern for loading and unloading times, to separate buses from parent drop off areas, providing an extra measure of security during these times. Additional parking has also been added.
The project will update inadequate systems, such as telecommunication, intercom, and fire systems, and addressing the items approved by the KIDS Committee to improve the safety of the school site.
Also, during the summer of 2012, new Promethean Boards and Accessories were installed, supplied by a grant for this specific purpose by the Community Foundation of Western Nevada, to whom the District is extremely grateful for the opportunity to provide a Promethean Board in each classroom at all elementary schools District-wide.
