2009-10 Radon Information |
 |
| |
In March of 2009, DCSD contracted with Colorado Vintage Companies to perform radon testing on all DCSD school sites and support facilities. It was confirmed that district wide, radon levels were below the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) action guideline of 4.0 pCi/L.
The exception to this was 11 total rooms between 4 school sites: GES, GWHS, CVMS and PWLMS. Colorado Vintage Companies assisted DCSD in investigating the cause of the elevated levels, and we were able to mitigate these areas before retesting again in April 2009. (One exception was GWHS, which was not retested in April 2009. Please see below for additional details.) In all remaining instances, minor improvements to the HVAC systems for those rooms were made prior to retesting. In April 2009, all rooms reported levels below the EPA’s action guideline upon retesting.
The DCSD Maintenance Department has since procured a Continuous Radon Monitor (CRM) to assist in testing, and two employees have been NEHA certified in Radon Measurement per EPA guidelines. In keeping with EPA recommendations regarding retesting of rooms with previously reported elevated levels, those rooms that reported elevated levels during March 2009 testing were tested again in December 2009. ZCES was also tested in its entirety to confirm levels are remaining low after the mitigation efforts of 2008, and minor HVAC modifications made over the last year.
ZCES:
During the annual retesting in December 2009 at ZCES, tests indicated four rooms had elevated levels. These rooms had not been mitigated in 2008 due to previously acceptable test results. These rooms were retested in March 2010, and the results indicate all levels are now below 4.0 pCi/L, and there is no need for further action at this site. The DCSD Maintenance Department plans to test this site again during December 2010 to ensure levels remain at acceptable levels.
GWHS:
The Boiler system at GWHS underwent complete replacement during the summer break of 2009. During March 2010, the DCSD Maintenance Department conducted radon testing at GWHS in its entirety following the completion of the boiler replacement to establish a new baseline for GWHS.
From this test period, seven rooms at GWHS returned results higher than 4.0 pCi/L. Please see the table below which explains the next step for these areas:

Once the above actions have been finalized and retesting has been performed, DCSD will again provide an update as to the results. For now, full listings of the December 2009 and the March 2010 test results have been attached to this report.
Business Services will release this information on the District’s website and will continue to release additional information via the website as it becomes available. For more information, feel free to contact the Business Services Department.
